Commercial Electricians Drop The Tools For Padel Rackets: Electrical Careers at MEL

Updated: 2 days ago

The MEL team playing padel together in a teambuilding exercise.

We finally managed to get some time-out for our commercial electricians and down tools for the afternoon on Friday 15th November.

It’s something we make sure we do as a team at least four times a year, and every time we do it, we’re reminded we should do it more often!

Even with a relatively small team of approved electricians, electricians and apprentices (we currently have 25 full-time employees) and with over 50% of the team having been with us since the very beginning, it’s still important for us to spend time with each other socially. These moments are especially valuable for our apprentices and new team members diving into their commercial electrician career.

We always have apprentices coming through the system, and when they get the chance to meet some of the ‘older’ and more experienced hands socially, it makes it a whole lot easier to be assigned a new project with a different supervising electrician. Whether you're pursuing an electrical engineering career or are already a commercial electrical and facilities management professional, we all know that building these relationships is crucial to success.

So, we’ve made a promise to ourselves and the entire team at MEL: we commit to at least four team-building afternoons a year, as well as monthly Friday night socials for 2025.

For this session, we were hosted by Padel Maidenhead. The facilities are amazing; spotlessly clean changing rooms in the clubhouse along with then all-important bar (!), one indoor court and 7 LTA Grade A competition standard outdoor courts.

As most of us had not played Padel before, the coaching staff at Padel organised an introductory session and then a ‘friendly’ competition. We are always surprised at how competitive these friendly team-building days turn out to be.

With a team of high-achievers and master craftsmen, striving to be the best is part of our company DNA, much like in any great electrical engineering company ethos. At the same time, it’s nice to see that we’re capable of not taking ourselves too seriously all the time. We laughed all afternoon—even before enjoying a well-deserved pint at the end of the competition.
